WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

Barbara Kruger and the Spectator Conjecture

Two-Dimensional Design

My 2D Design midterm research was about Barbara Kruger’s artwork. The assignment intended to expose the student to a well-known 2D artist, either classic or modern, within the teacher’s list. Krueger is famous for her black, white, and red designs with bold texts that aim to criticize society and cultural stereotypes. I mainly focused on a prominent work of hers, “Untitled (Your Body is a Battleground),” and “Twelve,” a video installation. The paper acknowledges other examples alongside a small biography of the artist, concluding with interview segments and literary comparisons.

My first goal was to step out of my comfort zone. This is not to say I avoided the goal in other projects, but I always did so cautiously. While I was acquainted with some of the artists from the list, I decided to choose an unknown name for myself. I consulted the instructor about artists that are barely picked as research subjects, and Krueger was one of her recommendations. While some academics argue it is best to know one subject intimately rather than the foundations of all, art students should expose themselves to varied styles and references within their early years. After writing this paper, I was able to speak confidently about Barbara Kruger: some of her works, history, and purpose. Considering my previous ignorance, I have achieved my main goal.

My second goal was to actively seek out opposing views. I have always shied away from these sources because I thought they would negatively impact the reader’s perspective. After some experience with academic papers, I see controversial views almost as a necessity to eliminate bias and shed light on the subject. Before concluding my paper, I acknowledged two sources that did not praise or support Krueger’s work and identity as an artist. Lastly, I included interview portions where Krueger defends her beliefs and how she expects the viewer to react to a second opinion. The balance of information is proof that I accomplished my goal.

This paper was another opportunity to apply my knowledge in academic writing from Seminar and English classes. Writing about art can be as hard as making it, so I am glad to establish small steppingstones—like picking exotic subjects and controversial sources—that push me to become a proficient writer.
